Recap of 48-hour intensive focused on enhancing AIGA membership value and engagement

Summary by Jenny Price

Twelve AIGA chapter leaders representing Arizona, Blue Ridge, Minnesota, St. Louis, Seattle, and Wichita convened in Chicago, IL on March 17-19, 2016 for a tremendously productive inaugural Pop-up Innovate Mash-up funded by AIGA Innovate.

The intensive, well-orchestrated think-tank weekend was facilitated by our Mash-up host, Firebelly. Friday, we spent 12 hours working through a series of building exercises, mapping and sharing experiences, generating, discussing, prioritizing, and reiterating on ideas, and coming to a group consensus for next steps. Saturday, we spent 15 hours refining and reflecting on the multitude of possibilities and directions explored, including focused ideation on how the concepts could be brought to life. The group took each step thoughtfully, with dedication and care for the betterment of the organization.

Mash-up participants are now empowered to innovate on the challenges we identified to enhance AIGA membership value and engagement. This first of its kind, cross-collaborative chapter leadership ideation session left more questions than answers — a marker that the Mash-up experience was a success, yet begs further exploration.

Convening for biweekly check-ins over the next two months, the 12 leaders from 6 AIGA chapters will reveal the chosen direction/concept from this experience at the June 2016 Leadership Retreat in Raleigh, NC. We hope to inspire all 70 chapters to implement the “Pop-up Innovate Mash-up” ideas and build upon AIGA Innovate expectations.
