2016 Speakers

Antionette D. Carroll is the Executive Director & Founder of Creative Reaction Lab, an intensive social impact design collaborative (www.creativereactionlab.com). The purpose of the Creative Reaction Lab is to bring designers together to develop visual and experiential approaches to some of society’s largest problems using design-based problem solving and social entrepreneurship.
Gary Hustwit is an independent filmmaker and photographer based in New York and London. He has produced 10 feature documentaries, including the award-winning I Am Trying To Break Your Heart about the band Wilco; Moog, the documentary about electronic music pioneer Robert Moog; and an experimental feature film with the band Animal Collective. In 2007 he made his directorial debut with Helvetica, a documentary about graphic design and typography. The film marked the beginning of a design film trilogy, with Objectified, about industrial design and product design following in 2009, and Urbanized, about the design of cities, in 2011. The films have been broadcast on PBS, BBC, HBO and television outlets in 20 countries, and have been screened in over 300 cities worldwide.
Jessie Kawata is a Creative Strategist Lead at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Her passion for art, design, science, and sustainability led her to JPL where she helped to pioneer its very first in-house design studio. With a background in both product design and illustration, Jessie leads the area of visual and design strategy in JPL’s Innovation Foundry. Since she boarded the NASA spaceship, she’s been able to spearhead the integration of design-thinking, creative methodologies, human-centered design, and storytelling into early space mission concepts.
Joan Soranno is an award-winning architect specializing in museums and cultural institutions. Her passion for architecture is evident in her work style. With colleague John Cook as project architect, she has created a small design studio within the large-firm structure of HGA. This studio approach serves as an incubator for innovative design, in which her projects are aesthetically driven and technically challenging.
Mark Simonson has been thinking about letters and drawing letters for as long as he can remember. Not so much as building blocks of language, but for the particular and peculiar forms they take on in the physical world. He didn’t start his career making fonts. It was a daydream that began when he was in college in the mid-seventies. He became aware that designing typefaces was a thing one could do. His early attempts were feeble, but he kept practicing and dreaming while he spent several decades being a magazine art director or designing packaging and brochures.
Wing Young Huie has captured the complex cultural realities of American society for over 30 years. His work has been shown in international museums —over half a million people have viewed his traveling exhibit in China— and in Minnesota storefront windows. His most well known works, Lake Street USA and the University Avenue Project, transformed Minneapolis and Saint Paul thoroughfares into six-mile photo galleries, reflecting the everyday lives of thousands of their citizens.
Eric Rodenbeck came to San Francisco in 1994, lured by a deep curiosity for the budding internet-based industry in the city. Twenty years later, Eric’s passion for cities, design, and technology has made him a both a local and international leader at the intersection of all three. In 2001 Rodenbeck founded data visualization design studio Stamen, where he is Creative Director and CEO. The company’s high bar for elegant, data-driven design has brought many brilliant data artists, designers and technologists through its doors.
