2016 AIGA Portfolio 1-on-1® Scholarship Judges



Tim founded Larsen Design Office in 1975.  His firm attracted some of the best creative talent in the design profession and some of the most innovative clients in the country.  The firm won numerous awards including CA, Graphis, and AIGA.  Tim has been honored with the AIGA MN Fellow Award.  He served as a founding member and organizational chair of Minnesota Graphic Design Association (MGDA), predecessor to AIGA MN and a Director of the AIGA National Board.  Tim also conceived of and chaired the MGDA Lutsen Design Conference in 1980, now known as AIGA MN Design Camp.   He co-edited the “Core of Understanding” a National Endowment for the Arts grant-funded book on graphic design education.



Director of UX & Design at GoKart Labs. Tate is a master of her craft and has the mindset of a great director, spotting aesthetic opportunities from miles away. She builds bridges internally and with her clients, but won’t hesitate to kick your ass if she needs to: in the boxing ring, on the roller derby track, in a head-to-head design smackdown, just name the time and place.





Founder of Little & Company. Fresh out of college, Monica wanted to make a name for herself among the male-dominated field of design. So what did this plucky young problem-solver do? She didn’t just make a name for herself, she put her name on the door. More than 35 years later, her agency is still charging ahead in a very big way.

Spunky, fearless, no-nonsense and smart as a whip, Monica built Little from the ground up and the inside out. She’s known for inspiring design that works on a deeper level to solve problems, always asking for the “why” before the “what.” Monica was thinking strategically before anybody realized that strategy had a place in the world of graphic design, and her passion and insight has helped her become a notable thought leader in the design community.

Perhaps one of Monica’s most notable qualities in an industry that’s often (and incorrectly!) stereotyped as egocentric is her big, generous heart. Monica always has the best interests in mind for those around her. Her personal mission is to inspire everyone to give back to the community. In fact, Monica’s passion for philanthropy is a huge part of her legacy at Little and has been the driving factor in our ongoing pro-bono work with organizations such as Way to Grow.

Monica holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in visual communications from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD). In 2012 she received an AIGA Fellow award from the Minnesota chapter, an esteemed prize that honors her contributions to the design community. Aside from playing den mother to all of us at Little, Monica is a true family person. She also dedicates a substantial amount of time to sharing her business acumen and philanthropic ideals with various nonprofit boards and committees. Simply put, Monica Little makes a big impact in everything she does.


Bruce EdwardsChief Creative Officer. Creative Director. Designer. Consultant. Bruce Edwards’ titles and teams have always had one goal: to provide creative thinking for evolving brands.

For more than 25 years, Bruce has guided strategy for clients like Target, Time Warner Cable, Select Comfort, Best Buy, General Mills and Minute Clinic — with colleagues at Fame and Rapp Collins, and now as Edwards & Company.

Bruce has juried design and interactive competitions and his work has appeared in Communication Arts, Graphis, HOW, Tokyo Art Directors Club Annual, American Corporate Identity, Art Directors Annual, Print and Stores of the Year, to name a few.

Between work, travel, and periodic invitations to lecture at business schools or teach at his alma mater, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Bruce continues his quest to play 100 golf courses on his bucket list…currently at 57.



Chank creates new custom fonts to help build great brands and identities. Chank Fonts are sold through great distributors like MyFonts,, Typekit and Fontspring. Custom font projects are all managed mainly produced by company founder Chank Diesel. We create a number of new custom fonts for corporate clients every year.

Clients happy with our custom font work include Ben & Jerry’s, Target, Indian Motorcycle, Doctor Who, Cartoon Network, Electronic Arts, Scholastic Books, Simon&Schuster, Walt Disney and many more.

Chank Co also offers custom font licensing for software and hardware manufacturers and app developers who require fonts to enhance the appeal and functionality of their digital products.



@mike_arney is a Senior Designer at Clockwork and graduate of the College of Visual Arts (Rest in Peace). Prior to Clockwork, Mike worked at various agencies in town such as Periscope and Little in both print, and digital roles. Mike participates extensively in the local design community, including  AIGA MN, MIMA, and AdFed.
Mike’s client experience includes work on Columbia Sportswear, Lowe’s, Target, Minnesota Twins, Sealy and many more. Mike has received design recognition from HOW, AIGA MN, AdFed and Creative Bloq.
