Brain Flexing by Überscüber
Close Your Eyes and You Will See
Wendy Hurd, Principal, Überscüber
You are invited to try something a little out of the ordinary. Come work with Wendy Hurd of Überscüber to flex your brain, close your eyes, and find a fast, fun, and relaxing way to knock down a creative block. Or just chill out and do something fun without thinking too hard about life. The Überscüber workshop gets to your creative intuition. Attendees will take away relaxation techniques, an original work of art you might want to hang up on your fridge, and a unique way to discover new creative inspiration.
Workshop 3
Designing the User Experience: How to Design for the Web, Hand-Held, and Tablet Devices
Chuck Hermes, Chief Experience Officer (CXO), Clockwork Active Media Systems and Rett Martin, Creative Director, Clockwork Active Media Systems
The thought of designing for the web or mobile can be intimidating. The rules are much different than designing on the printed page. Perhaps you are unsure of the terminology, or worse yet, cringe at the thought of learning to write html or JavaScript. In this workshop we will break down the world of interactive design into language that we can all understand. We will discuss what makes "good" interactive design and how our work as print designers is more influential than ever in user experience design. We will look at the technologies and their capabilities from a designer's perspective. We will talk about the introduction of the new tablet devices and how that will impact our work as designers. And most importantly, we will converse around why now is the perfect time to dive in. Bring your questions and prepare to be inspired.
Workshop 5
Decipher the Art of Giving by Achieving Real Business Results
Jay Miller, Creative Director/Founder, IMAGEHAUS
Jay Miller founded IMAGEHAUS, a design consultancy for consumer brands, in 2000. He will inspire you by sharing his approach to design that has lead IMAGEHAUS to be recognized as a highly reputable creative group within the industry. The discussion will demonstrate how creativity has made an impact on the community through the creation of 4c: The IMAGEHAUS Giving Program, which has awarded over two million dollars in creative services to strengthen our community.
Workshop 7
Pull A Print
Ben Levitz, Owner/Creative Director, Studio On Fire
Making letterpress prints need not require a printing press. In this workshop, we'll use brayers and our hands to explore pulling prints from a variety of materials including Hamilton wood type, found objects, textures, and photopolymer-plated images from the CSA archives. Attendees will create their own broadside poster print. Participants are encouraged to bring their own items for making a custom printed object. (Items to bring could include blank canvas bags, tee shirts, and fabric pieces. Light colors will work best.) Be sure to wear clothes you plan to have inked.
Workshop 9
Confounded by Copyrights?
John Pickerill, Attorney, Fredrickson & Byron
When is it fair to borrow from another's work? Learn the tricks and trends for clearing copyrights and navigating copyright "fair" use. Also, get answers to any questions you may have about legal issues in the world of design.
John Pickerill is an attorney in Fredrikson & Byron's Advertising, Marketing & Trademark Law Group who specializes in helping creative professionals. John was an advertising account executive at Carmichael Lynch for 5 years before going to law school. For the last 8 years, John has been practicing law in the only dedicated advertising/design legal practice in the state, handling creative issues most attorneys never encounter. This legal experience, coupled with John's creative background and common-sense approach, provide designers with a true ally in the legal world.
Workshop 2
Bookbinding
Julie Baugnet, Professor of Graphic Design, St. Cloud State University
Have you ever wondered about the structure of a book? Deciphered its spine and leafed through its signatures? This workshop will demystify the codex book and teach you a few simple binding techniques that you can use for your journals, personal portfolios, or your new zine. You will learn how to do a 3-hole binding with a cover for a CD insert, and create a book using a Japanese stab binding technique. Bring your passion for paper!
Workshop 4
Package Design
Brad Surcey, Design Director & Partner, Zeus Jones
When designing, finding the right starting point can be a hard thing to figure out. At Zeus Jones, we have a process that helps ensure that our work is both a good fit for the client and appropriate for the category. Nowhere is this process put to the test more than in our packaging work for Thymes, whose brand is in a constant state of renewal. This workshop will start with a look at the work we've done with Thymes over the last couple of years. Next, we will walk through an abbreviated version of our design process. Participants will be asked to think about a brief for a new Thymes product line by participating in a series of short brainstorms and evaluating the competitive set for potential open space in the category. Later, we'll break into smaller groups to create moodboards that would serve as a starting point for a design solution to fit our brief. In the end, each group will be given the opportunity to discuss how they arrived at their design ideas.
Workshop 6
Where the Web is Going
Jamey Erickson, Owner/Creative Director, Sevnthsin and Aaron Shekey, Senior Designer, Sevnthsin
The folks from Sevnthsin will discuss the endless amount of deciphering involved in the creation of new and engaging interactive experience. Every day, their task is to figure out the latest and greatest technology as well as pair it with what's happening from a creative and technological/code-based standpoint. So come hear what makes them tick and why their constant quest into the unknown requires the utmost in decipherability.
Workshop 8
Want to be a Better Designer? Go Play.
Sara Summers, UX Evangelist, Microsoft
We're adults. And that's a problem. We sit at a desk, meet deadlines, answer email, and go to meetings, but none of these things facilitate creativity, fresh ideas and inspiration. Design was born to frolic! Heck, it's in the definition: the process of design is described as 'ludic', from the Latin root ludere, meaning "to play". So let's break out the markers, playdough, games, and toys. Together we'll learn how to summon the brightest ideas and think through problems with social creative play. Then transfer our insights into powerful, collaborative concepts to share with clients and teammates alike. Afterward, you will be a better designer; scout's honor.
Sara Summers coauthored the recently published book for experience designers, entitled Dynamic Prototyping. She has a personal design mantra: happy, healthy designers and developers working and playing together to create beautiful, inspirational products.
Workshop 10
Screen printing
Kevin Hayes, Lovely MPLS
Sometimes you need a release where you can roll up your sleeves, crack a beer, and get ink all over your favorite jeans. In this workshop, we will discuss the ins-and-outs of screen printing and its many uses in today's design world. We will discover what it takes to get your own setup going in your apartment, basement, or workspace and participants will have the opportunity to pull their own copy of a Design Camp 2010 themed print.
Dress appropriately because you may have some battle damage from this one.
